Somayeh Gholami is a Persian calligraphy and contemporary artist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Her artistic practice explores Kufic and Nastaliq calligraphy through painting, abstraction, geometry, memory, and cultural identity. Working with letters as visual forms, she transforms calligraphic elements into contemporary compositions that explore the relationship between writing, image, and emotion.

Born in Iran, Somayeh holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Coimbra (2013) and a Master’s degree in Naskh and Ketabat calligraphy from the Society of Iranian Calligraphers (2006). She has been practicing Persian and Arabic calligraphy for more than 20 years, with a particular focus on early Kufic and Persian calligraphy.

Her work combines form, colour, texture, and the structure of letters to create compositions that move between calligraphy and contemporary art. She has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions and has conducted calligraphy workshops, talks, and artistic projects in Portugal and internationally.
